Bahrain-based kite surfer set for another challenge

Manama : Anke Brandt, a Bahrain-based kite surfer who made it to the Guinness World Record by kite surfing from Amwaj Islands to Abu Dhabi, will attempt a new challenge next month. In early September, she along with Portuguese Kite-surfer Francisco Lufinha will attempt to cover more than 1500 Km crossing a third of the Atlantic ocean.

“It started in 2014 in Bahrain with a Wold Record kite surfing 250km in 12h. Two years later, I managed to break my own record kite surfing 30h non-stop covering 491km from Bahrain to Abu Dhabi. It is now time to dare my limit again; The Atlantic is calling!” Anke Brandt said.

“It is a mission to connect the Azores with the Portuguese mainland. Francisco Lufinha, a friend and adviser on my past missions, invited me to his ultimate Odyssey in the Portuguese Sea.

Francisco Lufinha is also a world record holder he currently he holds the world record for the Longest Journey kite surfing without stops, achieved in 2015 between Lisbon and Madeira, covering 874 Km of the Portuguese coast during 48 intense hours without stops,” she stated.

“We will cover an approximate distance of 1500 km, which can take a minimum of 5 days. We are two kiters sharing the distance and will swap riders every 8h, one of us will always be on the water, no matter what. This crossing will be the most vulnerable to weather changes, accumulated fatigue and danger at sea. The distance is so great that no motorboat can reach the distance. Our support team will follow us on a sailboat. We will be totally independent and will be going only with the wind,” she said.
